I found a very interesting tool. This tool is like total commander which I normally use. This tool is run on windows 7 and free for download. You can download at any time but remember that this tool is still alpha version. You can try this tool but should not be your primary tool. We should wait for later after the stable version has been released.

Best antivirus in 2009

0 komentar
what is considered the best antivirus in 2009? The following reviews about it from about.com.
Avira AntiVir Personal is a free antivirus product that is highly recommended by many antivirus testers, including About.com.
There are many reasons, not the least of which is that the product is proven over time (it is currently version 9, which is a testimony to how it has evolved steadily over the years). It is available in a free version and a premium paid version, both of which have plenty of appeal.

  1. A free version is available (the price is paid by popup window advertising).
  2. AntiVir offers both antivirus and antispyware defense.
  3. AntiVir has many options for scanning: look for rootkits, choose specific drives, look inside passworded files.
  4. Offers realtime (constantly running) protection, which is good if you regularly get file attachments or constantly download files.
  5. The quarantine feature is presented very cleanly, with many options for how to handle the quarantined items.
  6. One-click removal makes cleaning viruses and malware really convenient over time.
  7. Has a relatively small memory footprint, so leaving the product running is a non-issue for users with 4GB of RAM or more.

Want To Try Out Google Chrome OS For Yourself? Here’s How.

0 komentar

by Jason Kincaid

The public debut of Google Chrome OS today has the press abuzz over the potential of the new web-based operating system. And now that it’s open sourced, you have the chance to try it out for yourself. Unfortunately, most people aren’t ready to undertake the daunting task of actually taking Google’s recently open-sourced code and turning that into a bootable computer. So we’ve put together a step-by-step guide to doing this, for free, in around 15 minutes (depending on how long it takes to download the OS itself). No, this won’t get your computer booting Chrome OS natively (and frankly, you probably wouldn’t want to yet anyway). But it will get it up and running in a virtual machine using the free software VirtualBox, which is available for Macs, PCs, and Linux.

First, a few caveats: we didn’t create the Chrome OS build ourselves — it was downloaded from BitTorrent. In theory it could possibly have been tweaked by some malicious hacker to steal your Google account information (this is unlikely, but who knows). There’s an easy fix if you’re worried though: just go make a throwaway Gmail account, and use that to play around with the OS. Also note that because this is running in a virtual machine, you’re probably not going to be seeing great performance (like that 7 second boot time). But it’s more than good enough to get a feel for the OS for yourself.

First, you need to get an image of Chrome OS. You can do that using this torrent. You can also try out the build that GDGT has uploaded, which worked fine in our test as well. If you get the torrent version, you’ll see it’s in a .BZ2 format. You’ll need to extract it. Macs should be able to do this automatically, but for Windows you may need a tool like Win Rar.

Once that’s done, download a version of VirtualBox for whatever OS you’re running on here and install it. After registering (or declining to) you’ll be met with a screen like this. Click the button that says “New” in the upper left hand corner. We’re going to be making a new virtual machine.:

You’ll enter a wizard like this. Hit next.

Go ahead and title the OS whatever you’d like. For the operating system, choose Linux, with Ubuntu as the version (other setups could potentially work, but this is the only one we’ve gotten working).

Choose how much memory to allocate to this virtual machine. This will be dependent on how much memory you have in your computer. The more, the better, but if you choose too much your real computer will become unstable/very slow.

Here’s the tricky part (fortunately it isn’t very tricky). You don’t want to create a new hard disk, instead, you want to use an existing hard disk. Don’t choose one from the drop down menu either — you’re going to want to hit the folder icon just to the right of that to enter the ‘virtual media manager’.

Hit the ‘Add’ button.

Now you have to find the Chrome OS image you downloaded earlier. This is probably on your desktop or in your downloads folder. Once you’ve found it, hit ‘Open’.

Hit ‘Select’ once you reach this window.

Almost there. Make sure ‘use existing hard disk’ is checked. Hit next.

Hit ‘Finish’

You’re done! Hit Start. Hopefully the screen will go black, but only for a little while (this could be anywhere from 10 seconds to a minute or so, depending on how fast your computer is).

Once you’re in, you’ll see a splash screen for ‘Chromium’ (which is what Google calls dev builds of Chrome). To login, you’ll need to enter a valid Google Account ID. Your standard Gmail account should work, but as we said before, this build of ChromeOS came from bittorrent, so you may want to use a throw away account like we did in the screenshots below (you can make one here).

You’re in. Now time to explore. To be honest, everything looks quite similar to Google’s Chrome browser, but there are a few key differences. Note the battery life indicator and options menu in the far upper right. Also try playing around with the ‘New Window’ functions — you’ll find that it’s difficult (if not impossible) to navigate between multiple windows. And be wary of the Bookmarks manager. As far as I can tell, there’s no easy way to get out of it — you’ll have to manually create a new bookmark, which will kick you back into the browser mode once you click it. Oh, and good luck finding the ’shut down’ button, because we sure can’t.

You probably won’t need it, but the shared user password for this install (which you’d need for functions like sudo) is ‘chromeos’ according to the torrent’s listing on ThePirateBay.

MojoPortal A Solid CMS Option For .NET Shops

1 komentar

by Peter Hagopian

While there are plenty of options to choose from if you're looking for free, open source PHP-based content management systems, the list is much shorter for organizations using Microsoft's .NET framework and coding in C#. While DotNetNuke has received the lion's share of attention over the past year or so, it certainly isn't the only game in town.

That brings me to mojoPortal, an ASP.NET-based content management system that's been quietly building a solid, mature platform for nearly 5 years. While mojoPortal is primarily developed and maintained by Joe Audette, there's an active community of users and contributors and a solid set of documentation to help new users get up to speed.

It's a surprisingly flexible platform. Although it's written in C#, mojoPortal can actually run on a number of different platforms, including Microsoft's .NET framework or the open source .NET alternative, Mono. On the database side it can run on SQL Server, MySQL, PostgreSQL, and a handful of other options.

In terms of features, mojoPortal covers most of the basics that you'd expect from a content management system platform that's been around for five years. As stated on the site:

You can think of mojoPortal as a Starter Kit for Advanced ASP.NET Web Sites and Portals. Out of the box, mojoPortal provides dynamic database-driven Web site(s) with an XHTML compliant Content Management System and community features like Blogs, Forums, Image Galleries, etc.

The most recent version of mojoPortal (2.2.8.2) was released earlier this month, but the team behind it has a rapid development cycle -- it seems as if it has been putting out a new release every two to three weeks. Based on the road map and what ends up in each release, it's clear the team is reading its feedback and responding to requests quickly.

Having more options -- particularly when it comes to choosing a content management system -- is a good thing, and mojoPortal is well worth adding to your list for evaluation.

Norton AntiVirus 2010 17.0

0 komentar

I want to show the review from CNET about Norton Antivirus. I used use Norton, now not anymore. In my experience Computers often struggling when running the program from norton.

In the 2010 version of its well-known antivirus program, Symantec continues to build on the unexpected progress it made last year. In addition to maintaining the quick load and scan times, and significantly smaller system footprint, Norton 2010 includes a behavioral detection engine based on both behavior and reputation.

Called Quorum, this new engine doesn't adversely affect Norton's performance--a major concern after years of system-crippling sluggishness. It works in concert with Norton Insight, introduced last year as a whitelist-style guard for ''trusted'' files. By examining your files and how they behave--both locally and when trying to access the Internet--and comparing them with other Norton users, Symantec claims that it offers better protection than its competitors. Like its competitors who also have behavioral detection systems, however, Norton allows you to opt out of anonymously submitting your data without sacrificing the protection that Quorum provides. Third-party detection and removal ratings are not available for this new version, but last year's results placed Norton in the upper echelon for efficacy.

Norton AntiVirus lacks the premium services offered in Norton Internet Security. These include a firewall, parental controls, Wi-Fi protection for unsecured hot spots, and identity protection including antiphishing tools and browser search result authentication for Internet Explorer and Firefox. Norton AntiVirus also offers only one license, instead of the three that come with its bigger brother. It does offer the same support network, lacking a searchable knowledge base but including e-mail, IM, phone support and the Symantec forums. The trial has been doubled from 15 days to 30. Norton's recent approach to performance and its continued efficacy make Norton AntiVirus 2010 a must-consider program for its class.

Portable Ubuntu Runs Ubuntu Inside Windows

0 komentar

I am always interested what can linux can do. I’m not hardcore fan of linux, but I’ always interested something new in computer word. I have run Portable ubuntu in my xp sp 3 and it runs well. It’s really good jobs, congratulation ..

Windows only: Free application Portable Ubuntu for Windows runs an entire Linux operating system as a Windows application. As if that weren't cool enough, it's portable, so you can carry it on your thumb drive.

Built from the same guts as the andLinux system that lets you seamlessly run Linux apps on your Windows desktop, Portable Ubuntu is a stand-alone package that runs a fairly standard (i.e. orange-colored, GNOME-based) version of the popular Ubuntu Linux distribution. It just doesn't bother creating its own desktop, and puts all its windows inside your Windows, er, windows.

The coolest parts about Portable Ubuntu are:

It actually works (in most cases, on most systems).
It fits on a (larger) thumb drive and can run entirely from it.
It can work on, and save to, your Windows folders and files.
It's persistent, so changes you make and apps you install are carried around with you.
It's easily manageable from Windows, and works great on dual monitors.

CCleaner

For along time I’m fan of CCleaner. It’s very easy to install and very easy to use too. Find the latest release here.

CCleaner is a freeware system optimization, privacy and cleaning tool. It removes unused files from your system - allowing Windows to run faster and freeing up valuable hard disk space. It also cleans traces of your online activities such as your Internet history. Additionally it contains a fully featured registry cleaner. But the best part is that it's fast (normally taking less than a second to run) and contains NO Spyware or Adware! :)

Cleans the following:

  • Internet Explorer
  • Firefox
  • Google Chrome
  • Opera
  • Safari
  • Windows - Recycle Bin, Recent Documents, Temporary files and Log files.
  • Registry cleaner
  • Third-party applications
  • 100% Spyware FREE

Microsoft Plays Hardball With Windows 7 Versions

0 komentar

When Windows Vista proved too big to fit early netbooks, Microsoft resurrected XP at a lower price to satisfy that market. Microsoft would only sell XP to an OEM if the system was sufficiently underpowered that it couldn't run Vista. Microsoft has already said that all versions of the slimmer Windows 7 should run on netbooks, so what will happen with Windows 7?

Microsoft has been mum on details, but there have been some worrisome rumors that the company might come out with a "Windows 7 Starter for Small Notebook PC" and limit its use to netbooks. (Given that they did it with XP, it's not a stretch to think they'll try it with Windows 7.) Let's go back to the charges leveled against Microsoft by the Department of Justice in the 1990s. In that document, you'll see this claim:

66. Furthermore, Microsoft expends a significant portion of its monopoly power, which could otherwise be spent maximizing price, on imposing burdensome restrictions on its customers [OEMs] — and in inducing them to behave in ways — that augment and prolong that monopoly power.

One of the outcomes of Microsoft's consent decree was that OEM pricing was based on volume; OEMs that have the same sales volumes pay the same price. It was intended to prevent Microsoft from playing favorites -- rewarding or punishing OEMs for other related actions that pleased Microsoft. In this case, Microsoft would be pleased if competing operating systems didn't take over on netbooks. Before Microsoft brought back XP, Linux had a huge market share on netbooks. If Windows 7 is to maintain a hold on the netbook market, Microsoft has to offer OEMs a price that won't kill their budgets.

Microsoft has every right to do crazy things with feature sets in order to segment the market and produce a Windows 7 version they can sell at a low cost. The three-running-application limit in Windows 7 Starter is one such crazy thing. Microsoft crosses the line by attempting to contractually limit OEMs on the hardware that Starter can use. That shouldn't be Microsoft's decision. If Starter is good enough for netbooks then it should be available to OEMs for whatever hardware that can run Windows 7. If Microsoft fears Starter will hurt the reputation of Windows 7, they shouldn't offer it.

Naturally it would be good for Microsoft if they could charge different prices depending on the final cost of the product. That would be too obviously predatory, though, so a hardware-limited Starter is a "subtle" solution they hope will pass anti-monopolistic muster. The use of netbook hardware requirements to set prices and limit the use of Starter sure looks like it's just a diversion for the real issue, which is the threat of other operating systems gaining a foothold on netbooks. Besides all the Linux competitors, arch-enemy Google may be getting Dell to deliver an Android-based netbook, which must have Microsoft concerned.

Microsoft wants to maintain its market-share lead on netbooks without sacrificing profit margins on full-sized PCs. But OEMs should be able to buy any Windows 7 OS for the same volume-defined price and use it on any hardware with no restrictions. Allowing Microsoft to adjust pricing and limit distribution based on target hardware is a page from their old mid-1990s monopoly playbook, this time intended to muscle out OS competitors. If Microsoft does try such a ploy, it should be stopped.

Computer Virus Strikes FBI, U.S. Marshals: Report

0 komentar

In one of his many memorable skits, my favorite comedian, the late George Carlin, lists “Things you don’t want to hear,” and this gem is among them:

“Well, Jim, there’s no reason why you shouldn’t live another 50 to 60 years. However, you will be bleeding constantly from both eyes.”

If you’re a federal law enforcement officials who is charged with protecting the kind of ultra-confidential information that increasingly travels through computer networks, I imagine the equivalent of that bad news for Jim goes something like this:

“A mysterious computer virus has infected your networks and forced both the FBI and U.S. Marshals to shut down.”

Yet that’s pretty much what happened this week, according to Devlin Barrett of the Associated Press.

Officials at the U.S. Marshals reportedly confirmed that they disconnected from Justice Department computers after the virus hit, and the FBI conceded that the agency also was having a problem.

Here’s what FBI spokesman Mike Kortan told Barrett: “We too are evaluating a network issue on our external, unclassified network that’s affecting several government agencies.”

What those agencies are he would not say, according to Barrett.

Yet the incident points to a disturbing phenomenon that deserves some thought. It is the business world, not the U.S. government, that leads the industry when it comes to developing new technology to cut costs, boost communications and increase efficiency, and it’s the private sector that often is ahead of the curve when it comes to detecting cybercriminals’ activity.

Consider: At about 76 percent of all phishing attacks, software represents the largest doorway that cybercriminals such as hackers use to enter computer users’ systems and steal confidential information. And one Cupertino, California-based security, storage and systems management solutions provider – Symantec Corp. – recently reported that it’s seeing malicious code grow at a record pace.

In recent weeks, more and more home and small office computers have seen their networks compromised by Internet security attacks that gain traction through the devices that many of us use to make our home-surfing lives more portable: routers. (To try and preempt the attacks, one Fountain Valley, California-based company recently launched a new system that prevents malicious software by detecting whether responses are generated by humans or computers.)

According to Stephen Trilling, vice president of Symantec’s (News - Alert) security technology and response group, the company is seeing attackers shift away from mass distribution of a few threats to micro-distribution of millions of distinct threats.

“Cybercriminals are profiting from creating and distributing customized threats that steal confidential information, particularly bank account credentials and credit card data,” Trilling said. “While the above ground economy suffers, the underground economy has remained consistently steady.”

That recalls some of what TMCnet heard recently from the world’s largest maker of computer networking gear. Officials at Cisco Systems Inc. say that cyber-criminals’ attacks are becoming more targeted and sophisticated.

This latest problem apparently started yesterday morning, for both the Marshals and the FBI. No data was compromised, officials said.

The type of virus that caused the shut-down and its origin are not clear, they said.

“In Thursday’s incident, the Marshals Service shut down its Internet access and some e-mail while staff worked on the problem,” Barrett reports. “The FBI made similar moves to protect its system.”

McAfee Internet Security 2009

0 komentar

At first glance, McAfee Internet Security 2009 appears not much different from last year's offering, a truth that masks some improvements in programming under the hood. In our tests, we found McAfee Internet Security 2009 to be as fast as the much improved Norton Internet Security 2009. What McAfee adds to the competitive landscape is faster malicious software detection. With Active Protection, they're neither talking about hourly signature file updates nor five minute updates like rival Symantec; at McAfee they're talking about instant updates. In terms of features, we found that McAfee has the most tools of any suite we reviewed. In addition to antivirus, antiphishing, antispyware, and a personal firewall, McAfee provides a backup-and-restore feature and several handy utilities. We still have minor issues with McAfee's technical support, although it has improved over last year. For a full protection suite, we were impressed with McAfee Internet Security 2009.

Intel Announces Streamlined Linux for Netbooks

0 komentar

n an effort to counter the growing dominance of Microsoft's Windows OS in netbooks, Intel on Tuesday announced a beta version of a Linux OS it has developed for low-cost laptops and mobile devices.

The chip company on Tuesday announced a beta of Moblin 2.0, a stripped-down distribution of Linux optimized for smaller screens on netbooks and mobile Internet devices (MIDs). Intel has fine-tuned Moblin for netbooks based on Atom chips with a simple user interface and improved power-saving features.

Most netbooks today ship with Intel's Atom chip but run the Windows XP operating system, which Microsoft ships for low-cost laptops. But Intel wants to ensure that every "ounce" of technology -- including Moblin -- put into Atom is optimized for size and power consumption, said Doug Fisher, vice president and general manager of the software and services group at Intel, during a conference call on Tuesday.

Klingon Anti-virus Available for Download

0 komentar

They walk the warrior's path and they devour horrible-looking bowlfuls of red worms, but hey, Klingons need malware protection too.

To help Worf and his compatriots in their trek for PC security, anti-virus maker Sophos has translated one of their tools into Klingon. Yes, really. It's now available as a free download from http://www.sophos.com/klingon-anti-virus/.

Sophos' Graham Cluely says the app is a working, translated version of Sophos' Threat Detection Test, which is not the full Sophos antivirus product, but can run an on-demand virus scan alongside your existing antivirus protection. The app (both the translated and English versions) isn't meant to replace AV, but to instead provide an additional scan to see if your current program has missed anything.

In an explanatory post, the company says it was actually asked by a (hot-blooded and prone to violence?) potential customer whether the software could be translated, and that it got help from a member of the Klingon Language Institute named naHQun in creating the translation.

List of Anti-Virus Software Compatible with Windows 7

0 komentar

Within a few hours of Windows 7 being released my inbox started filling up with readers asking what Anti-Virus software they should install in Windows 7. Since this seems like such an important topic, I decided to make a list of packages that work.

If this is your first time here, you should check out our review of the Windows 7 Beta.

Note: as a general rule, software that works on Windows Vista should work just fine on Windows 7, with the exception of software that installs low-level system components like an Anti-Virus, firewalls, or similar. These packages often are designed to only run on specific versions of Windows.

Windows AntiVirus Detection

When you first install Windows 7, you'll get a popup balloon message telling you that you need to find an antivirus program online… notice the wrench on the balloons that will let you turn them off easily.

Microsoft: "Windows 7 is automatically tuned to work efficiently on SSDs"

0 komentar

We'd all like to be able to afford a solid state drive (SSD) such as Corsair's P256, and if you just so happen to be picking one up, you may want to consider using it with Microsoft's Windows 7 RC.

That's the message being sent out by the Redmond giant's storage and fundamentals teams, who together state that Windows 7 has been engineered with SSD operating characteristics in mind.

Speaking on the Engineering 7 blog, Microsoft's Michael Fortin highlights the advantages and disadvantages of SSDs, and details how Windows 7 hopes to overcome the latter with a series of SSD-specific refinements.

As those who've been following the tech will know, SSDs can offer mixed performance depending on the workload - particularly when it comes to random writes and flush requests. Such is the complexity of flash memory, that flash cells need to be erased before they can be written, a complex error correction logic is needed to ensure electrons don't fall into the wrong cell - and there's also the fact that flash cells eventually wear out.

SSDs, then, are anything but perfect - so what's Microsoft doing to help their case? Well, a couple of things. Firstly, Windows 7 will introduce support for the Trim operation. As a result, SSD's that support the Trim attribute of the ATA protocol’s Data Set Management command will be flagged by Windows 7, allowing the OS file system (NTFS) to tell the ATA driver to erase SSD pages as and when files are deleted. By doing so, subsequent writes won't require a blocking erase operation, says Microsoft.

Secondly, Windows 7 is said to perform well on modern SSDs as a result of an engineering emphasis on reducing the frequency of writes and flushes.

Elsewhere, the operating system is pre-configured to recognise SSDs and will treat them according to determined performance. Microsoft tells us that Windows 7 will disable disk defragmentation on all SSDs as standard, and SSDs deemed by the operating system to have good random read, random write and flush performance will automatically run with SuperFetch and ReadyBoost disabled - features designed primarily to bolster performance on traditional hard disks.

It all sounds promising on paper, and though we've yet to put SSD performance in Windows 7 to the test, Microsoft appears to be making a concerted effort to support solid-state media and states that it "expects more and more PCs to be sold with SSDs in place of traditional rotating HDDs".

If you're interested in reading more on Windows 7's SSD enhancements - including a useful set of frequently asked questions - head on over to the Engineering 7 blog.

Top 5 Magazine iPhone Apps

0 komentar

It has been a while since we warmed up the old iPhone (it runs on teeny tiny vacuum tubes, you know) and checked out what magazines are trying to do with the cuddliest gadget on the planet. The iphone offers print publishers a remarkable palette. In miniature, it is more like a printed page than any other digital device. It is portable and handheld, mimicking the magazine in those respects better than Web sites. It is lushly colored and sharp as a pin, far superior aesthetically to that Kindle thing Amazon keeps trying to sell us. And it has a newsstand, the app store, that allows for some degree of merchandising – albeit not enough. And yet, few magazine brands really have leveraged the iPhone very effectively. The earliest entry, Conde Nast’s Style.com, probably remains the best. Visually striking, it gives the user a very simple interface that uncovers a trove of multimedia assets that play very well on a small portrait screen.

It has now been just over one month since RIM launched its answer to Apple’s App Store, BlackBerry App World, and we thought it would be a good time to check back in with our thoughts on the offering. Of course it’s way too early to reach any real conclusions as App World is obviously in its infancy, but we can still offer our first impressions of the portal, ping a few developers to see how they’re getting along and most importantly, see what you guys think about App World so far. So hit the jump for our thoughts on RIM’s on-device application portal.

Sun deal poses challenges for Oracle

0 komentar

Oracle Corp., which announced plans last month to acquire Sun Microsystems for $7.4 billion, should benefit from the merger but will face significant marketing challenges in communicating the combined brand, industry analysts say.
In announcing the deal April 20, Oracle CEO Larry Ellison emphasized the strength of the end-to-end solution that Oracle will now be able to offer its customers as a result of the acquisition.
“Oracle will be the only company that can engineer an integrated system—applications to disk—where all the pieces fit and work together so customers do not have to do it themselves,” he said. “Our customers benefit as their systems integration costs go down while system performance, reliability and security go up.”
Under the terms of the deal, software company Oracle is acquiring the entire Sun portfolio, which includes hardware, software and services.
Most notably in the software category, Oracle will pick up Sun's Java open source software development platform, its Solaris operating system and MySQL, its open source database software. It will also own Sun's hardware business, which comprises servers, storage devices, desktop workstations and peripherals.
“The first big thing is the cachet, or lack of cachet, that Oracle has had in open source,” said Ray Wong, VP-principal analyst at Forrester Research. “They now have the crown jewels of open source with Java and MySQL.”
Another big advantage of the merger, Wong said, is the end-to-end solution Oracle will be able to deliver. “It used to be just application and database software,” he said. “Now they are trying to make the case that they can deliver hardware, software, middleware and database software all in one-stop shopping, which will help their customers reduce costs.”
Wong added: “The challenge is to figure out the perception of Oracle being in the hardware business. What does it mean, and can they successfully convince people to buy the whole stack from them?”
He noted that Oracle has already been successful in managing and marketing other acquisitions. For example, in 2005 it acquired CRM software company Siebel Systems, and last year it bought enterprise software company BEA Systems.
Jean Bozman, VP-research for IDC's enterprise platforms group, said one of the greatest assets Oracle will get is Sun's installed base of customers and the service contracts and upsell opportunities that go along with that.
“They have at least 1.6 million servers [installed worldwide] and also storage and service contracts,” she said, noting that about 40% of Sun's revenue now comes from services. “From a holistic view, they have a large installed base, the opportunity for new offerings and things like upselling.”
For example, Bozman said that although MySQL is a database product, it does not necessarily compete with Oracle database products. “Oracle has always been about cross platforms and running on as many platforms as possible,” she said. “It may be that the MySQL offering, which is widely used, could bring additional business for other Oracle products.”
Bozman said one of the biggest challenges for Oracle will be integrating Sun into its operations and ensuring that it runs a profitable business.
Bozman also noted that because of the downturn, spending on big IT projects is being cut or deferred but, as conditions improve, IT investment should pick up. That will benefit Oracle in the long run.
Other industry experts, however, were not as bullish on the deal.
Jim Gregory, CEO of brand strategy firm CoreBrand, noted that Sun had a brand score of only 16 on a scale from 1 to 100 in CoreBrand's 2008 Brand Power report, while Oracle had a brand score of 30. “In terms of what they are buying, it is not a heavyweight brand,” Gregory said.
“It seems like it made a lot more sense for IBM [Corp.] to make the acquisition. That seemed like a much better fit,” he said, noting that IBM had a brand score of 76.
In April, IBM made a bid to buy Sun for an estimated $7 billion but was outbid by Oracle, according to people familiar with the talks.
Gregory said one of the immediate challenges for Oracle is to communicate its strategy for the acquisition and what it means to its customers.
“What they will need to do is tell a story very quickly,” he said. “Otherwise, Oracle's image might be hurt. They have to communicate clearly why they made this acquisition, why it fits as a company and what they intend to do with it. They have a short window of opportunity.”

Feds' Red Tape Left Medical Devices Infected With Computer Virus

0 komentar

WASHINGTON--The Conficker Internet virus has infected important computerized medical devices, but governmental red tape interfered with their repair, an organizer of an anti-virus working group told Congress on Friday.
Rodney Joffe, one of the founders of an unofficial organization known as the Conficker Working Group, said that government regulations prevented hospital staff from carrying out the repairs.
Joffe, who also is the senior vice president for the telecom clearinghouse Neustar, told a panel of the House Energy and Commerce Committee that over the last three weeks, he and another Conficker researcher identified at least 300 critical medical devices from a single manufacturer that have been infected with the computer virus.
The devices were used in hospitals to allow doctors to view and manipulate high-intensity scans like MRIs and were often found in or near intensive care unit facilities, connected to local area networks with other critical medical devices.
"They should have never, ever been connected to the Internet," Joffe said.
Regulatory requirements mandated that the impacted hospitals would have to wait 90 days before the systems could be modified to remove the infections and vulnerabilities.
Joffe's testimony and earlier reports of infected medical devices show the risks involved in efforts to reap the economic benefits of a networked world. President Obama's stimulus package has allocated billions of dollars for digitizing medical records and networking the nation's electric grids.
"The open Internet, one of its great values is it allows you to connect fairly cheaply and fairly easily to other computers," Joffe said. He added, however, that "the Internet was never designed to do the things it's doing today."
That includes connecting control systems to the Internet to manipulate and coordinate the nation's electric grids.
"The future of widespread (electric) meter-to-meter communication does have me concerned,” said Dan Kaminsky, a technology consultant who last year discovered a critical flaw in the Internet's core infrastructure. "I would like to see more security for those meters.”
It was recently reported that Chinese and Russian spies had infiltrated the grid networks. Politicians introduced a bill on Thursday to give the Homeland Security Department and other federal agencies more authority over utilities in order to protect the "smart" grid from cyberattacks.
Joffe and other witnesses said that, at an operational level, the DHS is the appropriate government agency to improve cybersecurity. He called the U.S. Computer Emergency Readiness Team, which is operated by the DHS, "woefully under-staffed and woefully under-funded." As part of its mission, USCERT acts as a liaison between the public and private sectors.
Gregory Nojeim, senior counsel for the Center for Democracy and Technology, also said DHS should naturally hold jurisdiction over cybersecurity, as long as it makes its actions more transparent and receives policy guidance from the White House.
Policymakers need to be clear and open in their work with the private sector, Nojeim said, and should avoid giving anyone in the government – even the president – too much power over private networks. He urged the congressional panel to reject legislation from Senator Jay Rockefeller, D-W.Va., that would give the president power to shut down any critical network – federal or otherwise – in an emergency.
"Any such shutdown could also have far-reaching, unintended consequences for the economy and for the critical infrastructures themselves," he said. "To our knowledge, no circumstance has yet arisen that could justify a presidential order to limit or cut off Internet traffic to a particular critical infrastructure system when the operators of that system think it should not be limited or cut off."

Great ‘LINQ To Sql’ Tutorial Series From ScottGu’s Blog
Compilation By Kadir Pekel
http://it-box.blogturk.netPart 1 – Introduction Over the last few months I wrote a series of blog posts that covered some of the new language
features that are coming with the Visual Studio and .NET  Framework “Orcas” release. Here are pointers to the posts in my series:
. Automatic Properties, Object Initializer and Collection Initializers
. Extension Methods
. Lambda Expressions
. Query Syntax
. Anonymous Types
The above language features help make querying data a first class programming concept. We call this overall querying programming model “LINQ” - which stands for .NET Language Integrated Query.
Developers can use LINQ with any data source. They can express efficient query behavior in their programming language of choice, optionally transform/shape data query results into whatever format they want, and then easily manipulate the results. LINQ-enabled languages
can provide full type-safety and compile-time checking of query expressions, and development tools can provide full intellisense, debugging, and rich refactoring support when writing LINQ code.
LINQ supports a very rich extensibility model that facilitates the creation of very efficient domain-specific operators for data sources. The “Orcas” version of the .NET Framework ships with built-in libraries…

LINQ in .NET 2.0

0 komentar
When using Visual Studio 2008, it is possible to use most of the new language additions of C# 3.0 in a .NET 2.0 project. This because the C# 3.0 compiler is used for both .NET 2.0, .NET 3.0 as well as for .NET 3.5 projects in Visual Studio. This means that local variable inference, object initializers, extension methods, lambda expressions, etc. … can be used in a .NET 2.0 project.

The one thing that is missing however is LINQ because those extensions are packaged in the new System.Core assembly which comes only with .NET 3.5.
But now you can explore Linq in .NET 2.0 project with Corefor2.

Mac Users Prefer Linux Over Windows

0 komentar

Apple users are the most dedicated and fervent operating system fans with undying loyalty to their operating system, hardware and peripherals. And they're just as loyal now to the new Unix-based OS X as they were to the old proprietary Mac OS. However, when given the option of a Linux-based computer or a Windows-based one, 100% say they would rather use Linux.
Mac users cite stability, ease of use, reliability, lack of viruses and sleek design as their main reasons that they love their Macs.
I've personally never owned a modern Mac or an iAnything so I can only report what I've been told in a recent survey of Mac users. I do understand, however, their reasons for loving the Mac. I've never been able to afford a Mac product but, if what they say is true then the Mac may pay for itself many times over with uptime and fewer problems.
I do find it funny (strange not haha) that Mac users gave the same reasons given by Microsoft, and its fans, as why someone should love Windows. And those same Windows ads and fans say just the opposite about Linux.
How can it be both ways?
Mac users would rather use Linux because it's more like the Mac OS but Windows users say that Linux is too hard. Something there doesn't make sense to me.
I'm not taking sides on this one but rather only reporting what I've been told.
For the sake of you and other DaniWeb readers, I'd like to hear from Mac users who've also used Linux to find out if my other survey was flawed. Write back and let me know what you think about the following question: If your Mac were unavailable to you and you had a choice of a Windows PC or a Linux PC, which would you choose and why?

IBM and Sun? What's In It For Linux?

0 komentar
Everyone from techie bloggers to technical journalists to stay-at-home moms are talking about today's big news: IBM is trying to buy Sun Microsystems. Big deal. What's in it for Linux?

As a matter of fact, it is a big deal. And an even bigger deal for Linux.

Sun owns MySQL, Java, Glassfish, VirtualBox and the Solaris Operating System. It also has its own proprietary hardware known as Sparc but is it a good buy for IBM?

On the 'no' side of things, Sun is sinking in the West with no foreseeable chance of rising again in the East. Solaris and Sparc platform sales are suffering and those technologies are on the wane in the datacenter space. Sun gives Solaris away for free these days and has discounted their hardware to a suprising point. Sparc systems used to be the Apple of the datacenter--robust, yes but very expensive--but at least the Sun mice had three buttons instead of just one. The Solaris OS and the Sparc platform are burdens that IBM will have to kill off once the purchase is complete since they offer no real revenue potential.

On the 'yes' side, IBM is buying great opportunity by acquiring Java--a technology that is embedded into its WebSphere line. Purchasing Sun also gains IBM a hopeful replacement for its own languishing DB2 product. VirtualBox is a nice addition to IBM's virtualization efforts. Right now, it's little more than a Desktop-level product but work is underway to create a server version that should prove interesting to those who need a simple solution. Basically IBM is getting MySQL and Java in this purchase and little else that has value. I hope they realize this and go into the negotiations with this in mind.

So, what does this have to do with Linux?

IBM's investment in Linux and open source software is huge and their own flagship AIX runs Linux executables. IBM has also invested heavily in virtualized Linux on its MainFrame platform. Adding Java and MySQL to this mix conjures up big things for the future in my mind. For one, Cloud-based (Cloud=Linux) Java apps with MySQL backends that run on everything from cell phones to MainFrames--oh yeah, there's a big market there.

However this IBM and Sun thing plays out, I hope that it's good for both companies although I have reservations predicting anything positive for Sun.

What do you think of the possible Sun buyout by IBM? Do you think it will be good for IBM? Sun? Linux?

Will Microsoft Abandon Windows to Compete with Linux?

0 komentar
As much as Microsoft loves to grinch about Linux, they've made significant changes over the years to compete with it--and will abandon it altogether to maintain their competitive edge. Windows 7 will be the last Windows product.

What changes has Microsoft made to compete with Linux? They've prettied it up a bit, revamped some of Windows hardware pain points, and fixed some of the infinite rebooting that must occur any time you install software or patches.
They've also done quite a few name changes over the years beginning with the Windows NT to 2000 name change. Then Windows XP. What the heck does XP stand for anyway? Now Vista, which for me is the high-end Windows Me (Mistake Edition), and in the near future--Windows 7, which should be Windows NT 8 if you're keeping up.

So what will Microsoft do after Windows 7 to remain competitive? I think they've realized that bloated operating systems aren't going to do the trick with the introduction of Netbooks and smaller devices. They've also realized that their bullying and scare tactics don't work with today's more tech savvy customers.

Ok, no more waiting. I'll tell you (and Microsoft) what their next move will be to maintain Desktop dominance.

Microsoft Desktop.

That's it, Microsoft Desktop.

They might follow it with a year just so you know which one you have when you call for tech support. For example, when they abandon Windows 7, the product will be Microsoft Desktop 2012, then Microsoft Desktop 2015, and so on.

Ok, Microsoft, tell me I'm wrong or pay me for the idea. I'll be waiting for my check. If we call it a "bonus," we'll get a lot more air time out of it.

Another Linux Desktop Diss from Red Hat

0 komentar
lmost a year has passed since I wrote, Novell CEO Disses Embrace of Desktop Linux where I told you how Ron Hovsepian, Novell CEO, totally slammed Linux as a desktop operating system and now another major CEO comes out publicly against Linux on the desktop. Red Hat's CEO, Jim Whitehurst, actually said "First of all, I don't know how to make money on it."

Wow, Jim, really? Perhaps you shouldn't be CEO of a Linux company.

How does Microsoft make money off of Windows? They sell it. I know it sounds crazy, Jim, but that's how it works. You create something that people want and they'll buy it. Isn't that cool?

I'm not sure which stone Whitehurst is living under but someone should leave it unturned and get a more innovative thinker in the driver's seat at Red Hat. I know someone who'd take the job and be great at it.

Desktop Linux can be a reality but not if we roll over and let it die. Whitehurst did make an interesting analogy using a Hockey game and comparing to Desktop Operating Systems by saying that he "doesn't want to be where the puck is but where it will be."
Hey, Jim, have you ever been to a Hockey game? The puck travels fast and sometimes unpredictably and goes in different directions based on which team is in control.

Jim, you're misguided and should be replaced. Unfortunately, it's guys like you who rise to the top. My guess is, though, that you won't last long with your obvious business myopia.

Apparently creative thinking isn't a prerequisite for the CEO position.

In this same desktop diss-down, it's funny to note however, that Novell's Hovsepian apparently has changed his tune regarding Linux on the desktop with a statement that he's optimisitc about Linux on the desktop, especially on Netbooks.

Now that's a departure from his earlier attitude less than a year ago. Ah, what a difference a year makes.

Linux can save millions of dollars on the desktop and if the CEOs of Novell and Red Hat can't figure out how to sell that opportunity to customers, then I respectfully throw my hat into the ring for their jobs. Oh, and I'll do it for half of what they're currently making. You know where to find me.

What do you think of Linux as a desktop operating system and the attitudes of these CEOs of Linux companies that can't figure out how to sell their product?
